Build Your Legacy

Build Your Legacy

As I sit and write this blog, the topic has me thinking of the lyrics to Beyoncé’s  song " I Was Here." The first section of the song rings so true:

I want to leave my footprints on the sand of time

Know there was something that, meant something that I left behind

When I leave this world, I'll leave no regrets

Leave something to remember, so they won't forget. I was Here

As these lyrics come alive in my head, it has me questioning my own legacy and what it would look like? Often as parents, we think about the legacy we will leave for our children, and how it will be passed on to future descendants.. Will it be altered in ways in which they will be afforded more opportunities that weren't given to me or even to my parents? We are working on creating our legacy every day, but how do I know if Rodney and I are building one correctly?

 According to https://www.merriam-webster.com,

-legacy is a gift by will especially of money or other personal property or something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor from the past.

From this definition, we can assume it's something that has to be passed down, inherited or bequeathed to someone. It could be monetary or symbolic, but the main assumption is that it is supposed to be something of significance that is left to the next generation.

As entrepreneurs, we always hear the word legacy being thrown around, and how important it is to leave one, or build one for the future. Shoot, our website has the word legacy included in the title, so we definitely understand and believe having a legacy is significant. Even the Bible depicts the importance of leaving a legacy. In Proverbs 13:12 it states, a good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children.  However, what is a legacy really good for, and at what age do you leave one? Does it matter if you are age 20 or 80?  Do you have to be dead before your legacy can be fulfilled?

As reported by legacyproject.org, Leaving a legacy foot prints on a beach

Legacy is the fundamental principle to what makes us human. Without a sense of working towards or creating a legacy, human beings would lose meaning in their life. A legacy provides a glimpse into how we interact and build strong relationships and communities. In short, a legacy provides us with the perspective on what's important in life and what kind of life we want to live for so we end up with the type of world we want to live in. When summed up, legacy is really about life and living; and without leaving a legacy all the knowledge and wisdom you gained throughout the years will disappear when you leave the earth.

A legacy can take on different forms, from children, to grandchildren, to businesses, a community, financial funding or even in the form of a book. For us, it's in the form of family and business. Currently, we are building a platform to help inspire others to become entrepreneurs in order for them to create their own success and live out their dreams. We showcase entrepreneurs doing amazing things in their industry to spread the word on different sites and services that may be available in your local community. In addition,  we provide resources for entrepreneurs to grow and develop on a personal, as well as, a business level.

From our research, it shows having a legacy is important as it ultimately demonstrates how you want to be remembered, and can help to ensure how life will be after you are gone. It provides the future generations with something greater than what you had in order to go beyond the present moment in time. A legacy can be started at any age as the purpose is to leave behind something that is long lasting.

Success magazine references four areas you need to consider while building a legacy:

  1. Understand your legacy-captures the essence of why leaving a legacy is important to you in the first place. It focuses on what part of the lessons you have learned do you want to preserve for future generations to learn.
  2. Choose your legacy- how do you want your legacy to look. As legacies come in various forms,  what level of effort, commitment and education do you want to put towards your legacy.
  3. Focus on your legacy -what are your strength or special areas of interest? How can it be applied to reach people in the future and is it something that can be taught or trained. What labor of love do you want to leave behind so the world knows you were here.
  4. Live your legacy- your plan of implementation, how does your actions and words in present time leave a mark for the future. The wisdom you receive and the way you experience life lead to the execution of your legacy.

In closing, your legacy is something that no one else can take from you. It is a reflection of your work, dreams and experience wrapped up into one, in order to leave a lasting impact on generations to come. While our time on earth may seem long, it is relatively short, so we have to make the best of it with respect to making a permanent impression for years to come. However you define your legacy, whether it be big or small, put time to work on your legacy every day.
