Wellness Wednesday Back to School Tips

As kids return back to school, this time of the year can cause anxiety and stress not only for students but also for parents. As they transition from carefree flexible summer days into routine structured school days.


To help beat the stress, here is three helpful wellness back to school tips. As our boys will be starting preschool in September, we are starting to utilize these tips now to make this process smooth and enjoyable as possible.



Tip #1

Establish a moderate bedtime and stick with the routine. 


This tip is not only helpful for students but for parents as well. As studies have proven an adequate amount of sleep helps with brain function. It can also prevent the onset of mental health illnesses. Set a time that works for both you and your child and stick with it!



According to the American Academy of Pediatric the recommended amount of sleep need per day is:


  • 3-6 Years Old: 10 – 12 hours per day
  • 7-12 Years Old: 10 – 11 hours per day
  • 12-18 Years Old: 8 – 9 hours per day
  • Adults 7-9 hours per day


So let’s get those kiddies and ourselves to bed on time, in order to have a high functioning productive tomorrow.


Tip #2

Encourage healthy eating by serving healthier snacks and entrees. healthy-eating

I don’t know about you but we have a picky eater and it can be challenging to serve something new if the color or texture is different. To open up their palates to healthier foods options, we have discovered the art of food cutters. (Genius!!)  Can you say amazing investment! The best part I can also use them for baking 2 for 1 deal, oh yeah!!


For an added bonus try making recognizable images out of all the fruit shapes for more snack time fun.


For older kids try hummus or avocado as a healthier substitute to mayo on their sandwiches. As well as multigrain bread or wheat wraps instead of Hero bread and rolls.

Tip #3

Set a Schedule 


Nothing beats a good scramble in the morning! So wish, I was talking about eggs right now. You guys know those days when no one knows where’s anything is and your youngest child decides to have a meltdown right before we leave and you are already late for 10 minutes. (Ahh, yes fun times!)


To avoid the mayhem, we devised a nightly plan that includes packing lunches, pressing clothes and setting out daily essentials near the door to make for a smooth sailing morning. Typically, we get started once the boys had their bath and are off to bed. We hope you found these tips helpful.
